What do you do if you are having a panic attack?
is this a panic attack:
when your heart feels really mad and you can’t breathe properly, you feel lightheaded and can’t focus. I think I also hyperventilated and nearly passed out.
what do you do to calm down/avoid
I went outside for a smoke, but I’m guessing this isn’t standard medical advice.

Usually I try to sit in front of a fan or roll the window down if I am in the car. Counting down from like 20 helps too. As hard as it sounds focus on something. If you know your having a panic attack it helps. Because you can let your mind know it will be over soon.
Try to get away from what is upseting you I can understand the smike thing though cause i get panic attacks while driving so thats a big smoke time for me
It’s really cliched, but breathing slowly into a paper bag really works. When you hyperventilate you increase your oxygen intake which can make you go a bit light-headed and woozy. Once the breathing is under control, the rest comes back much more easily. Just sit calmly and wait for the feelings of dread and impending doom to pass, and you’ll be back to normal before you know it.
It’s all in your mind. Seriously do go see a doctor or have a check up to be sure and it would be good for you anyway, but if doc says ur ok, no you’re not sick.
I had it so bad once it lasted for 3 months. I would lay down in bed for hours or wait for the morning believing that my heart would stop any sec, it would be racing so badly I would tremble and couldn’t eat anything in the morning. I would be so tired. At first it was only when I was alone, then when I was with people I couldn’t enjoy a moment thinking it would come back. But it was during the holidays, then the school started again and it passed and I know it will never happen again.
It happens because of stress and working too much for a long period of time sometimes, but don’t let yourself rest for too long either coz it gets worse then. But to all the people who has it, it’s all in your head there is nothing wrong with you you are not dying you will probably live so long you will wish to die!
View the techniques for control of panic attacks, in section 8, at ezy build, below. Begin by holding your breath for 5, or 10 seconds: this will give you the confidence to realise that YOU CAN CONTROL YOUR BREATHING, but not pass out, or die (your autonomic nervous system resumes breathing, if unconscious). Understand panic attacks, and what triggers them, in your life (if it is unresolved anxiety, see section 6). The paper bag method works for most people: try it. If you are fairly suggestible, the following are reliable:
Your last alternative is psychotherapy, to address its fundamental cause: read section 1, and examine the website, and use the locators, and phone book. I used to suffer from panic attacks, until I questioned what had changed recently in my life, to trigger them? I suggest that you learn, then practise the controlled breathing technique, until competent, then employ it, at the very first sign of a panic attack.
